Ben-Gurion International Airport: 2008 was a record year
Jan 5, 2009

Over 11 million passengers passed through BGIA on international flights - a growth of 10.27% in international passenger movement over the same period last year

Despite the global financial crisis, 2008 was the best year ever for Ben Gurion Airport (BGIA) with a record-breaking number of passengers.

Since the beginning of 2008, 11,478,027 passengers passed through BGIA on international flights - a growth of 10.27% in international passenger movement over the same period last year. International aircraft traffic grew by 11.45% since the beginning of the year, with 82,604 flights.

The chairman of the IAA board of directors, Ovadia Eli, said: “In light of the increasing number of passengers, the IAA will continue to stress safety, security and passenger services in all of its installations. In 2009, the authority will invest some NIS 3.7 billion on several new and important projects, including upgrading the runways; building a new control tower at BGIA; and instituting a HBS (Hold Baggage Screening) system that will enhance security and improve service."
