Customs seized a container load of Levaquin
Nov 13, 2006

Levaquin, a quinolone antibiotic, never got an import license by Israeli authorities. 21,000 bottles of the drug were seized in Ashdod port last week

The Israeli Customs Authority seized last week at the port of Ashdod a 40' container loaded with 21,000 bottles of Levaquin, imported from the USA.

Levaquin is a quinolone antibiotic used in adults to treat lung, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria.

Levaquin according to its producer, kills many of the types of bacteria that can infect the lungs, sinuses, skin, and urinary tract and has been shown in a large number of clinical trials to be safe and effective for the treatment of many bacterial infections.

The drug, according to customs press release, had never been granted an export license by the US authorities nor had it been granted an importation license by Israel's Ministry of Health.

Customs Authority added that the drug had been imported without the necessary medical supervision which can create hazard to the public.

Several people were arrested for questioning.
