Truck drivers working on the line Amman-Aqaba, have complained the delay in unloading containers at the port, which exposes them to severe damages caused by the delay.
Drivers and businesses have noted the impact of truck congestion and long waiting periods of almost 20 hours and threaten to address the government with a request to use the nearby Israel's port of Eilat, instead of Aqaba.
The President of Al Aqaba Chamber of Commerce and the Director General of Al Aqaba Chamber of Commerce issued a press release threatening that if the situation does not improve they will also apply for permission to use the nearby Israel's port of Eilat.
Spokesman for the drivers noted that the problems that occur in the port of Aqaba, is not because of the large number of trucks , but in the slow handling and clearance procedures , stressing the role of the union in demanding to expedite clearance procedures and enable drivers to continue their work. Drivers also complain the recent port rate increase demanding their abolition.
The Aqaba container port is the only sea port of the kingdom 's main import and export operations.
